Their Eyes Were Watching God

(PG 43) Thank yuh fuh ro’ compliments, but mah wife don’t know nothin’ ‘bout no speech-makin’. Ah never married her for nothin’ lak dat. She’s uh woman and her place is in de home.

Here we finally see that Joe doesn’t really think of Janie as highly as I thought she did before. He is basically saying her role isn’t to be smart and make speeches (possibly implying that she is too dumb to make speeches) but instead she belongs at home. This isn’t just a reflection on Joe however, it reflects men in general during this time period. Women were meant to stay home and cook and clean and such things, they weren’t meant to do things as sophisticated as giving speeches to the public. This represents the power struggle between women and men at this time.

  1. Good! Yeah - Joe wants to show off Janine like a prize that he has won.
