Their Eyes Were Watching God

(PG 44) But the whole town got vain over it after it came… the mayor didn’t just take it out of the crate…put it up on a showcase for a week for everybody to see.

Again here the lamp is representing Joe. He came in and the idea of him was great and it would have been good to have some underlying authority in the town, but that authority didn’t need to be flaunted and praised everyday. So at first the people were ok with the idea of Joe leading them (just as they voted that it was ok to get the lamp) but they didn’t know what they were getting themselves into once he was mayor, and all the things he was going to do to make himself look good (The big unveiling of the lamp, and the pride Joe had in it).
