Their Eyes Were Watching God

(PG 43-44) De mayor of uh town lak dis can’t lay round home too much…Ah can’t do nothin’ wid no store lessen youse there…’Tain’t nothin’ atall tuh hinder yuh if yuh got uh thimnle full uh sense. You got tuh. Ah got too much else on mah hands as Mayor. Dis town needs some light right now.

Unh hunh, it is uh little dark right long heah.

Joe is talking about how the town itself is really dark and that it needs some light. Some light being both literal and symbolic. While he has managed to bring people into the town he needs something that will really make the town come together and make the town proud, as well as sheding some actual light on the town. Janie here is agreeing with him saying that the street is awfully dark and could use some light, but she is also implying something else. She is also hinting toward her disliking in what just happened at the town meeting. She thinks that Joes search for power is changing him, making him treat her poorly infront of people, and respect her less. It is darkening his personality and so she is saying that he really needs to lighten up because the more power he is getting, the darker things are getting between them.

Good journal entries. Keep up the good work.

I've really been impressed. After you read BELOVED (and I won't have you read it until after break - so you can have a rest - I'd like to hear your thoughts about the comparison between the two).
